Scuba diving

Cephalonia has a particularly fascinating underwater world. The wreck of the British ‘’HMS PERSEUS’’ that rests on the sea bed on the southern side of the island surely makes for interesting exploration and underwater adventure.

Cephalonia is considered an exceptional destination for scuba diving. The earthquakes and amazing geological phenomena have created extraordinary natural formations below the surface of the sea such as faults, escaping gas and fresh water. What will impress you is the rare ocean flora that can be distinguished in the infinite Posidonia sea grass beds. The unique underwater caves at Fiscardo and wonderful depths at Aghia Efimia, Skala, Argostoli and Paliki welcome many scuba divers every year.

The wreck of the submarine ‘’HMS PERSEUS’’, located on the open seas between Cephalonia and Zante, at a depth of 52m, is a huge challenge for the more experienced divers. The Melissanis cave and lake exclusively offers the experienced cave divers a unique experience. The formation of rare beauty conceals impressive arcades at a depth of 20m, which communicate with the rest of the caves on the broader area. The cave, which has a depth in excess of 30m, is home to a small eel community. At Aghia Efimia, Skala and Fiscardo you will find organized scuba diving centres that offer lessons and tours to the island’s underwater world.

Sea Kayak

The sea kayak is one of the most enjoyable and environmentally friendly ways to appreciate the Ionian Sea, to get to know the Cephalonian coastline, to visit the sea caves and to travel with the dolphins!

The sea kayak offers you the opportunity to admire the Cephalonian’s natural coastal environment, as well as its distinctive contrasts: Cypress and pine trees that reach the sea, impressive calcareous cliffs, exquisite underwater rock formations, exceptional geological phenomena, beautiful and secluded beaches, either with sand or pebbles, crystal-clear waters and in the distance, quaint fishing villages and traditional settlements.

For friends of kayaking, Cephalonia organises coastal excursions as well as trips around the islands with over-night stop at fishing villages or in the country side. Included in these excursions are tours to aquatic sites, explorations of sea caves, etc. You will also find sea kayak lessons being organized in various parts of the island for beginners.

Water Sports

Cephalonia has a significant and organized infrastructure for water sports. At the larger more cosmopolitan beaches such as Skala, Makris Yialos, Lourdas and Xi, there are a number of water activities of varying difficulty degrees for the more or less adventurous and for every age.

At more organized beaches you can test your skills on the ‘’banana’’, at ‘’para-sailing’’, on the sea bicycle, water skiing, slalom skiing, jet skiing and ‘’oxoon hydojet’’ skiing, which is a slower version of jet skiing suitable for two adults and a child and is driven by all three people.

For the more powerful athletic types there are beach ball facilities on many beaches such as Makris Yialos, Lassi, Ai Helis, Livatho, Xi, Lepeda and Paliki.

Trekking

For those that love trekking and roaming around nature’s beauties, Cephalonia is a favourite destination. To begin with, the area around Mount Ainos offers a number of alternative and extremely interesting paths. The main path is considered to be the one that starts from the Aghios Eleftherios pass, cutting through the fir-trees forests and finishing at Mega Soros, the highest peak (route length:10 km; small degree of difficulty). Along  the route the trekker will see various indigenous flowers and plants and when reaching the peak will find ruins of the Temple dedicated in honour of Zeus Aniesius, as well as a unique view. Continuing from Mega Soros on to Arginia and the area of the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigis (source of life-giving), the trekker would be able to admire the wild horse biotope (route length: 5 km; average degree of difficulty.

In recent years, with the constribution of Europena funding, an organized network of tourist trips has been created , which includes information and rest and thematic paths throughout the island’s inner land. An interesting path begins at Aghia Efimia, cuts through a small, but beautiful valley such as the ones in the traditional settlements and animal farming areas of Falaris and Pylarro and ends up at Myrtos beach. The Pastra – Katelios, Sami-Acropolis - Antisamos paths, as well as those in the area of Poros, are equally beautiful.
