Monasteries & Churches

Monasteries and churches

Situated on the plateau of Mt. Omala amongst well-attended fields of the Robola zone is the Monastery of Aghios Gerasimos (16th century), dedicated to the island’s patron saint. During the procession of the saint’s relics in August the Monastery becomes a place of worship for the thousands of believers. In the area of Lassis, Argostoli there is a cave in which the Saint lived a hermit’s life prior to reaching the plateau. Today it houses a small chapel.

It is also worth visiting the Monastery of Pangia Atrou (8th century). This is the most ancient monastery on the island and comprises of a stately tower in a verdurous plateau amongst splendid scenery. The Church of Aghios Spyridonas in the Poulata settlement with a unique display of Baroque style should not be missed. The Monastery of Aghios Andreas in the Peratata village with its impressive wood-carved iconostases and frescoes, the Religious Museum and the unparalleled view for the Fortress of Aghios Georgios and the Monastery Kipouraion to the west of Paliki, set on a dramatic cliff above the sea. The sunset from this point is breathtaking. Finally the services held on Easter Tuesday at Monastery of Our Lady Themata on Mount Aghia Dinati as well as on the first fortnight og August at the Church of the Virgin Mary Lagouvarda, during which time small, harmless snakes fill the church, are exceptional.
