Archaeological Museum (G.Vergoti  St.).

The exhibition rooms contain archaeological finds (vases, tools, coins, sculptures, personal ornaments, mosaics, etc.) from the Palaeolithic through to the Roman period, illustrating the island’s long history and the development of its culture. One whole room is given over to the Mycenaean period, the most important in Kefalonia’s ancient history, with finds from the cemeteries excavated at Kokolata, Mazarakata, Lakithra, Mataxata, Kondoyenada and Poros. The exhibits are accompanied by photographs and information boards. In front of the meseum stands a statue of Ilias Tsitselis, a historian and folklorist from Lixouri.

Corgialenios Library (12, Ilia Zervou St.).

Founded under the terms of a bequest by Marinos Corgialenios (Koryialenios), a local benefactor, in 1924. The building was destroyed by the 1953 earthquakes and reconstructed in 1963 as it had been before. It contains about 60.000 books and is one of the biggest libraries in Greece. About half the books, in Greek and other languages, date from the nineteenth century or earlier. The oldest printed book is the lexicon calles Souda or Suidas, published in 1499. There is a special section of the library devoted to Kefalonian literature and newspapers and periodicals from the Ionian Islands, mostly from Kefalonia. The main collection has books of all kinds as well as a considerable number of manuscripts, including some of Byzantine music, and the personal papers of the Kefalonian writers Babis Anninos and Mikelis Avlihos. The oldest manuscript is a twelfth-century Gospel book. The main room, where the books are kept, also serves as a reading room and is sometimes used for lectures. Books may not be borrowed. Byzantine icons from the personal collections of Panayotis Harokopos and Panayis Vallianos are also exhibited in the library.

Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 8:00-21:00. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Corgialenios Historical and Cultural Museum (on the ground floor of the Corgialenios Library).

The museum has an extensive collection giving a comprehensive picture of life on Kefalonia in bygone ages, displayed in several rooms with a total floor area of 300 sq.m. The exhibits include old lace, embroideries and ladies dresses, traditional local costumes, household utensils and tools, old furniture, photographs of Kefalonia before the earthquakes, old prints, maps and paintings, old icons, sacred relics and carved wooden iconostases. One room is a reconstruction of a nineteenth-century bedroom. Books and pamphlets on Kefalonian history, published by the museum itself, are on sale in the entrance hall.

Fokas-Kosmetatos Museum (1,P. Vallianou St.).

This small new museum is on the ground floor of the Fokas-Kosmetatos Foundation, which occupies what  used to be the family home. The house was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquakes on a smaller scale than before. The private collection of the three Fokas-Kosmetatos brothers contains lithographs of scenes in the Ionian Islands and elsewhere in Greece and old coins from various parts of the Mediterranean basin.

Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 9:00-14:00. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.

The collection was put together recently by a team of scientists, all experts in their various fields, and provides a wealth of information about the flora and fauna of Kefalonia. The building also houses the Centre for the Environmental Studies, which has a library and a small laboratory.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday 9:00-13:30, 18:00-20:00. Saturday and Sundays 9:00-13:30. Closed on public holidays.
